Finding Yourself Again

This blog isn’t going to be what you think it is going to be. Well, maybe that’s too much of me to assume, but if you are searching for the magic way to feel like yourself again, this won’t be the spot.

In the very first therapy session I have with clients, I go over their goals. How do they want to feel after therapy is done? What will it look like, feel like, be like? How do they want to change? So many times I hear, “I want to feel like myself again,” or some iteration of that, as one of the client’s primary goals.

Look, I get it. Connection to self, others, and nature is all we really want deep down. But we can get really in the existential grey area (which honestly, I love) whenever we talk about the self. Who is that? How do we know it exists? (Again, I said it gets quite philosophical really fast.)

The best way I help my clients figure this out is to ask them how it actually feels when they are in alignment with their values. A lot of the time I will use Somatic Experiencing to help them feel into where they notice that in their body when they experience true joy and connection. Now, is that telling us what the true “self” is or who they really are? I don’t know. But I’m pretty sure that the way we introduce ourselves (“Hi, my name is Stevie and I’m a mom, wife, and therapist”) really isn’t who we are. Its non-tangible. It can’t go on a resume.

So… looking to “feel like yourself again”? Try noticing when you are in resonance body, mind, and spirit. It won’t give you all the answers, but it will help you find your way.
