Curious About Trauma Treatment?
For whatever reason, trauma seems to be a buzz word right now. As a therapist, it excites me because that means more and more people are going to find treatment that works for them! In this post, I’ll go over three methodologies that treat trauma so that you can think about what might work best for you!
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR. This method uses bilateral stimulation (usually by moving your eyes back and forth as directed by your physician) to help the brain reprocess a traumatic event. Your therapist will help you identify how you feel now about the trauma, as well as how you want to feel and think about it instead. It is well-researched and highly effective. At first it feels silly, but works so fast!
2. Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This methodology identifies how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors have shifted as a result of your trauma. By utilizing different behavioral and thought interventions, TF-CBT can help you to shift how you are feeling today.
3. Somatic Experiencing. Trauma leaves people in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze. Your therapist will help you track your nervous system and body cues in session in order to help you complete self protective responses that didn’t get to happen at the time, allowing you to have greater capacity to tolerate difficult feelings previously associated with the trauma.
