Negative Self-Talk: Everybody Does It.
So, you’re walking down the street and a woman passes you with a weird look on her face. You think to yourself “I knew it. I look stupid today. I shouldn’t have worn these pants.” Sounds hilarious, but it doesn’t feel that way, does it?
Admit it. You do this from time to time.
If you find yourself thinking negatively more often than you would like, you are in good company. Negative self-talk is human nature.
But it is, on the other hand, detrimental to your mental health. Negative thoughts make you feel horrible. Your thoughts have power over your emotions. That’s why you have to check your thoughts! Would you let your friend get away with talking to themselves like that? No way!
Let’s go back to the first scenario. You see the look on that lady’s face and instead you think “Maybe the sun is in her eyes. Maybe she has a wedgie. Who knows.” What’s different about this way of thinking? It’s no longer a negative reflection of yourself. You can stay emotionally neutral.
I find myself saying this on repeat to all my clients: You have to get in your own corner. What I mean by that is you have to find a way to be kind to yourself. Your mental health depends on it.
Still feeling stuck? Give me a call! With expertise in Cognitive Behavioral therapy, I can definitely help you find new ways of thinking about yourself and the world around you.
