Stop Explaining Yourself

Are you a self-professed people pleaser who doesn’t know what they want half of the time? Or do you know what you want, but you are terrified to ask for it? Therapy could be right for you.

Haha, jokes aside, it really might be.

People pleasing often times originates from developmental trauma. It is a response programmed to (originally) keep your careviers calm or happy with you, thus protecting yourself from unwanted emotional energy. .Over time, this becomes a chronic issue that creates a lot of stress in peoples lives.

People pleasing takes many forms. From not saying no to things, from over-explaining what you want, to reading subtle body language cues in the room and trying to “fix” the problem you feel, it knows no bounds if it goes unchecked.

A fantastic intervention for people pleasing is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which helps the client to really identify why clients are doing what they are doing, and the root emotional causes of the behaviors. Other interventions like Somatic Experiencing or EMDR help people to address the developmental trauma that lurks behind the people pleasing.
